ODE TO BOY
(Alison Moyet)
Chris Jeffries, Paino
Branden Romans, Guitar
Michael Musburger, Drums
This is my adult ode to Alison Moyet. I discovered her as a teenager and couldn’t believe there was another woman with a voice as low as mine! She helped me stop seeing my voice as this broken instrument I needed to change. This song is from Moyet’s solo work, and I just love her ache and the mood she casts with her tone.
This was also a chance to work with one of my core collaborators, genius composer and pianist Chris Jeffries, who is a bona fide Alison Moyet fanatic. With the ever-soulful guitarist Branden Romans, the three of us do this song live without drums. But it really wanted drums, so I asked Mike Musburger to play.
Musburger is a PNW local who was in The Posies and has played with a long list of legendary bands—The Fastbacks, Love Battery, The Supersuckers. Mike is a mensch, and we should for sure get this band back together!
THE BAND
Chris Jeffries is a composer of over a dozen original musicals that have been produced all over the world. He is a famous NW talent, heading up the original work that would put Annex Theatre and The Empty Space on the national map. Chris was the first ever Stranger “Genius Award” winner in Performance and he is also beloved as the legendary Dina Martina’s accompanist.
Branden Romans is all the things - guitarist, actor, potter. He has written original music for theatre productions all over Seattle and he plays with Sarah Rudinoff as often as possible!

Mike Musburger has had an amazing career as a drummer playing and touring with a who’s who of 1990’s power pop including The Posies, Fastbacks, Supersuckers and Love Battery. He is also an amazing technician and currently tours with Ringo Starr as his drum tech!
